A family trip to Puerto Vallarta is often one of the few times everyone is in the same place at the same time.
Parents, children, grandparents, siblings and cousins may be traveling together for a vacation, anniversary, birthday or family reunion — and that makes a professional photo session about much more than getting one good picture for the holiday card.
The goal is to create photographs that actually feel like your family.
As a Puerto Vallarta family photographer, I approach family sessions much the same way I approach weddings: I want the photographs to feel natural, connected and polished without turning the experience into an hour of constant posing.
We'll absolutely make the photographs where everyone is together and looking great.
But some of the images families tend to connect with most happen in between — children running toward the water, grandparents interacting with their grandchildren, siblings laughing at each other, someone fixing a child's hair or everyone simply walking together along the beach.
This guide covers what to expect from a family photo session in Puerto Vallarta, including timing, locations, children, large families, what to wear and how to make the experience enjoyable rather than stressful.
What Should a Puerto Vallarta Family Photo Session Feel Like?
Family photography doesn't need to mean standing in one spot while someone repeatedly tells everyone to smile.
Especially with children, that approach usually has an expiration date.
I prefer to begin with enough direction to make sure we create the photographs every family expects — the entire group, individual families, grandparents with grandchildren, siblings and couples when appropriate — and then allow more movement and interaction as the session develops.
The structure is there, but the photographs shouldn't feel overly structured.
With younger children, that can mean walking, playing near the water, being picked up by their parents or simply giving them a few minutes to explore instead of asking them to perform continuously for the camera.
With adults and multigenerational families, the challenge is often different: making sure we photograph the important combinations without allowing the session to become an endless checklist.
A good family session should leave enough room for both.
When Is the Best Time for Family Photos in Puerto Vallarta?
For most outdoor sessions, early morning and the period approaching sunset are the two most useful windows.
But I don't automatically recommend the same time for every family.
Golden hour and sunset sessions
Late-afternoon sessions are popular for a reason.
The light becomes softer, temperatures begin to improve and Puerto Vallarta's Pacific coastline can produce beautiful color as the sun approaches the horizon.
For couples and families with older children, this can be an excellent option.
The challenge is that sunset may overlap with dinner, bedtime or the exact time a toddler has decided the vacation is officially over.
A beautiful sunset isn't particularly useful if a two-year-old is exhausted.
Morning family sessions
Morning sessions can be underrated.
The beaches are often quieter, temperatures are more comfortable and younger children may be in a much better mood after sleeping and eating breakfast.
Morning light has a different character than sunset, but for some families a happy child is worth far more than perfect golden-hour timing.
When helping a family choose a time, I consider the age of the children, the location, season, group size and what the family wants the photographs to feel like — not simply where sunset appears on an app.
Where Should We Take Family Photos in Puerto Vallarta?
There isn't one “best” location.
The right place depends on the photographs you want, where you're staying, how mobile everyone in the family is and how much variety you want during the session.
Conchas Chinas
Conchas Chinas is one of my favorite areas when a family wants a natural beach environment with rocks, ocean and more visual variety than a completely open stretch of sand.
It can work beautifully for smaller families and couples, but some access points involve sand, rocks or uneven terrain.
If grandparents or anyone with limited mobility will be participating, that matters.
Puerto Vallarta beaches
A simple beach session can work extremely well, particularly when the priority is children, movement and natural interactions.
The exact beach matters less than factors such as light direction, crowds, access, tide, background and how far the family needs to travel.
Downtown Puerto Vallarta
Not every family session needs to happen entirely on a beach.
Downtown can provide cobblestone streets, colorful architecture and a more recognizable Puerto Vallarta atmosphere.
For families wanting greater variety, a longer session can sometimes combine an urban setting with the ocean.
Your resort or private villa
Sometimes the best location is where you're already staying.
Resorts and villas can be particularly useful for large multigenerational families because they reduce transportation and make the experience easier for small children and older relatives.
However, some resorts have their own rules regarding outside photographers, so it's important to confirm access before the session.
Family Photos at Puerto Vallarta Resorts
If you're staying at a resort, don't assume an outside photographer can simply arrive and begin photographing.
Policies vary.
Some properties allow outside photographers with advance authorization. Others may require a vendor fee, day pass or approval from the hotel. In some situations, photographing on the resort property may not be practical and meeting at a nearby public location makes more sense.

Traveling With a Large or Multigenerational Family?
Puerto Vallarta is a popular destination for family reunions, milestone anniversaries and vacations involving several generations.
Those sessions require a slightly different approach.
With a large family, I normally think about the session in layers:
Everyone together.
Then individual households.
Grandparents with grandchildren.
Grandparents with their adult children.
Siblings.
Couples.
Children together.
And any specific combinations that are particularly meaningful to your family.
The objective isn't to create fifty formal arrangements.
It's to make sure the important relationships are photographed without losing the natural rhythm of the session.
For multigenerational families, location selection becomes especially important.
A spectacular rocky beach that requires climbing across uneven terrain may be perfect for a couple and completely wrong for an 80-year-old grandparent.
Tell me about mobility considerations in advance.
Accessibility is more important than choosing a location simply because it looks impressive on Instagram.
What If My Kids Don't Cooperate?
This is one of the most common concerns parents have.
My recommendation is simple:
Don't build the success of the session around your child behaving like a tiny adult.
Young children may need time.
They may want to run.
They may refuse to stand next to their sibling.
They may suddenly become fascinated with a shell while everyone else is waiting.
That's normal.
Instead of fighting every interruption, we can often photograph through it.
Some of the strongest images happen when parents stop worrying about whether their child is looking directly into the camera and simply interact with them.
There will still be moments where I'll ask everyone to come together for a traditional family portrait.
But the entire gallery doesn't depend on keeping a child frozen in place.
A few practical things help enormously:
Make sure children have eaten.
Avoid scheduling directly through their normal nap time when possible.
Bring water.
Don't introduce uncomfortable new clothes for the first time five minutes before the session.
Allow a little extra time to get everyone ready.
And most importantly, don't spend the entire session telling children to smile at me.

What Should We Wear for Family Photos in Puerto Vallarta?
You don't need everyone dressed identically.
In fact, I usually prefer coordination rather than matching.
Neutral colors, soft earth tones, blues, creams and colors that work naturally with the tropical environment tend to photograph well, but wardrobe should also reflect the personality of your family.
Lightweight fabrics are particularly useful in Puerto Vallarta because of the heat and humidity.
Avoid choosing an outfit that looks amazing indoors but becomes unbearable after ten minutes on the beach.
For larger families, think about the group as a whole rather than choosing clothes one person at a time.
You don't need twelve people wearing the same shade of white.
Instead, choose a compatible palette and allow some variation in tone and texture.

How Long Should a Family Photo Session Be?
The right amount of time depends largely on the size of the family and the type of experience you want.
A smaller family that wants one location and a straightforward beach session generally doesn't need the same amount of time as a group of fifteen people traveling with grandparents and several children.
For most families, the objective isn't to make the session longer than necessary.
It's to have enough time that we don't have to rush every interaction or family combination.
Longer sessions can also make sense when you want multiple settings, an outfit change or a combination of Puerto Vallarta streets and beach photographs.
When you inquire, tell me approximately how many people are participating and the ages of the children.
That usually tells me much more than simply asking, “How long should we book?”
What Happens If It Rains?
Rain is part of photographing in a tropical destination, particularly during Puerto Vallarta's summer and early fall.
But a forecast showing rain doesn't necessarily mean it will rain at the exact location and time of your session.
Weather here can be highly localized.
When conditions are questionable, I monitor what is actually happening near the session location rather than making decisions solely from a weather icon several hours in advance.
If the conditions genuinely aren't appropriate for photography, we'll evaluate the available options based on timing, location and your travel schedule.
The goal is never to force a family into bad conditions simply because a session was scheduled.
At the same time, families visiting Puerto Vallarta often have limited availability, so planning alternatives intelligently matters.
How to Make Your Family Session Feel Natural
You don't need to know how to pose.
That's my job.
What helps most is arriving ready to interact with your family rather than trying to manufacture photographs yourself.
Hold your children.
Walk together.
Talk to each other.
Let kids play.
If something makes everyone genuinely laugh, keep going.
I'll provide direction when we need a clean portrait or a better composition, but I don't want every photograph to feel as though everyone was waiting for instructions.
The photographs should look polished while still feeling recognizable as your family.
That's the balance I'm looking for.
